June 7th 1714

I had been so careful. Leaving fruits and shellfish just at the edge of the water so he would think they had just floated in and always watching from the shadowy waters beyond his sight. The filthy pirate had thought himself lucky, I would guess, to be somewhere food often fell upon. But I made a large mistake... One that was now eating him alive.

A day ago he had spotted the treasure near the far back of the cave. And like any pirate he did two things. First, he made sure it was real, second he let his greediness get the better of him. I couldn't help myself I had to stop him before he took the gold out of greed. It was cursed. Said to bring hysteria to those who take out of greed.

I brought myself out of the water as far as I could and then let myself fall back, creating a splash that caught his attention. But, no matter how quickly I moved, I wasn't quick enough for my whole tail to be hidden in the shadows before he caught sight of the pearly scales that came to a much too narrow angle before the fin to be any fish.

Now all I can do is watch as he walks about in a huff of fear, unknowing that it was I who had scared him so. I can't help but to think of the sailor tales about the maids of the sea. Women with lovely voices who would seduce men into a watery death. Was that what he was thinking he saw? A monster with an angels face? Something that was not me...
